CRAZY BILLS: OJOTA COMMUNITY KICK-STARTS "OPERATION STOP IKEDC THIEVERY"

Worried by the outrageous electricity billing of residential places in their communities by a power distribution company, Ikeja Electric, 14 Community Development Associations at Ojota have kick-started a move to nip the ugly trend in the bud with what they call "operation stop IKEDC thievery in Ojota Community".

The communities which came under one umbrella known as Ojota Joint Development Association Forum stated that the move was necessitated on the realization that the Distribution Company was mainly interested in exploiting the residents of the area.

At a press conference organised by the forum on Friday August 20, 2020 at Biola Fadayomi Street Ojota, the chairman of the joint CDA forum Hon. Abubakir Adenekan criticized Ikeja Electric for systematic and deliberate exploitation of the people of the area through outrageous bills.

He stated that based on their investigation, houses in the community were being billed capriciously by the Disco as 50% of the meters claimed to be attached to the transformers in the community were not connected.

He said this was contrary to the statement of Ikeja Electric that bills being distributed in the community were generated from the readings of all meters attached to transformers within the community.

He noted that the replacement of distribution of hard copy of electricity bills for SMS was a calculated attempt by Ikeja Electric to perpetrate its fraudulent act.

His words: " The Company has been anti-people. Month in, Month out they have been generating and distributing fabricated electricity bills and intimidating the poor masses of our community to pay unverifiable and outrageous bills. Crazy bills has been the order of the day in the community but it has gone to another level.

"Electricity bills in Ojota have now trippled that of house rent. But like the saying goes 'whatever has a beginning must surely has an end'. The countdown has begun. No to exploitative electricity bills in Ojota. We have with this press conference initiated 'Operation Stop IKEDC Thievery In Ojota Community'."

And while disclosing that the community forum had met with the Acting Manager of Anthony Mega Undertaking station to register their grievances, Hon. Adenekan averred that some Ikeja Electric's marketers had on several occasions told the residents of the community that pre-paid meters would never be distributed to the area as they are regarded as cash cow.

He said whereas the average electricity bill in Ketu which is being serviced from the same feeder like ojota is between N10000 and N15000, Ojota Community is between N35000 and N45000 monthly.

The CDA Joint Forum Chairman therefore called on Ikeja Electric to immediately stop billings of unmetered premises; immediate metering of all residences of Ojota Community and writing off of all outstanding debts some residents owed NEPA and PHCN saying they have been cleared by Federal Government.
