STAKEHOLDERS IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY REJECT DOUBLE TAXATION.
Stakeholders in the creative industry including movie producers,cinema exhibitors and content developers on Thursday rejected the newly introduced tax by the Lagos State government describing it as incredible and double taxation as they are already paying to the federal agency.
At a stakeholders meeting conveyed by the National Film and video censors board(NFVCB) in Lagos on Thursday, stakeholders disclosed that they will always reject double taxation as it will definitely affect their income negatively.
Speaking at the meeting,the Executive Director,National Film,video and censors board, (NFVCB), Alhaji Adedayo Thomas stated that the meeting was called primarily to acquaint participants with development in Lagos and that he had already gotten in touch with the tourism commissioner in the state,Pharmacist Adebule Yussuf and that she was not carried along on the promulgation of the tax regime,that she promised to look into the matter and revert to him.
According to him" the peculiarity and importance of the objectives of this event has made us to brave the current circumstances of the corona virus pandemic to hold this physical meeting ,while observing all laid down protocols and safety measures, in order to proactively avert a future film industry pandemic"..
Continuing" we are all aware of the recent release by the Lagos State film and video censors board,demanding that all content creators should register their content within 30 days with a 5%levy charged . I would add that I had voiced out my repudiation of this and reached out to the Lagos State commissioner for Tourism,Arts and culture Mrs Uzamat Akinbile Yussuf who seemed not to have been briefed ,as the head of the supervisory ministry of the LSFVCB ,by the management of the board before issuing the statement. She was categorical on her position and promised to take necessary action. "
He advised that as stakeholders,who have been selected based in their track record must be able to present a unified voice so as to tackle the burning issues of double taxation and over regulation.
Representatives of the Association of Movie producers,Cinema exhibitors Association of Nigeria, theatre and art practitioners of Nigeria and others all insist that the tax regime being contemplated by Lagos State government must be rejected and that a peaceful attempt to engage the Lagos State government on the issue for an amicable resolution and way forward.
Among stakeholders at the meeting include notable Nollywood artists like Zeb Ejiro ,Keppy Ekpeyong,Paul Obazele,Agatha Amata ,Damola Olatunji,Peace Ayam Osigwe ,Bolaji Amusan etc
