INCREASING WAVE OF DRUG ABUSE AMONG YOUTHS… ‘SICKENING AND WORRISOME’ – HON. HAKEEM OLUSOLA SOKUNLE.



The call has again been made to Parents, Guardians, Teachers, and Religious leaders to pay attention to Nigerian children and youths in the face of the heightened rates of substance abuse in the society. 


This note was shared by participants at the 7th Annual Constituency Stakeholders’ meeting, held simultaneously in all the forty (40) Constituencies of the Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday Thursday 19th August, 2021.


In His Opening remark, the Council Mayor of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Otunba Kehinde Oloyede-Almaroof call for synergy among all political office holders in Oshodi, he also passed vote of confidence in the Lagos lawmaker for His brilliant and quality representation.


At the Stakeholders meeting hosted by the Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Hakeem Sokunle at the Legislative building of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Secretariat on Thursday 19th August, 2021, Stakeholders harped on the need for Youths to eschew drug addiction and abuse, because it is dangerous to their health and threatens the peaceful coexistence of the Nation.


While speaking on the theme of the meeting, *‘Increasing Wave of Drug Abuse: A Threat to Nation Building’,* the Chief Host said: "It was sickening and worrisome as bright and promising lives were wasting away on a daily basis due to the abuse of drugs amongst youths, it is disheartening as a lot of them are already infiltrating our Primary and Secondary schools."


He made the urgent call that 

"It is high time to act, and act fast in order to protect our future because the interest of our children and youth is the development of our Nation". This is getting too much and rampant and it must stop.


He appealed to religious leaders to join hands with the parents and teachers in bringing up these children in the way of the Lord. Let us stop copying everything from the western world and let’s begin to agree and speak in one voice. So as to ensure a peace, united and a better society.’


Also speaking at the event, Elder Osho noted that; ‘The issue of drug abuse is a topic that we should face seriously. It is affecting Nigeria and the whole world, and must be properly handled. In our days, nobody knows what drug is but as the world is evolving, it has opened people’s eyes to things that are inimical to their growth. Parents, Teachers, Governments should emphasis more on campaign against drugs through all media channels.


In attendance at the event was the Chairman and the Vice Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Hon. Kehinde Oloyede Almaroof, Hon Modupe Badmus-Aregbe, Councillors, former Council Chairmen, Apex APC leader of Oshodi Pa J. Olabintan, immediate past vice Chairman and the GM LASPEMA, Tpl. Daisi Oso, HRH Oba Shakirudeen Adeshina Kuti, (The Elewu of Ewu land) party Leaders, representatives of Religious bodies, South South, South East, Northerners, market leaders, Artisans, Students among others.
