NHRC calls for community service as punishment for crimes

The National Human Rights Commission has called for revision of the nation’s legal system where some criminals are made to do community service instead of being thrown to prison. This will reduce prison congestion and further engender community growth. Speaking at the Human Rights Monitoring Sensitization of Stakeholders on Decriminalization  of Petty Offences in Maiduguri, the Executive Secretary of National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu, lamented that there are a lot of vulnerable people in detention camps, many detained for minor and petty offences which could have been avoided if stakeholders put in place other laws or alternative instead of putting offenders in prison. The Director General of the National films and video censors board,Alhaji Adedayo Thomas has described the death of foremost theatre practitioner and professor of theatre,Prof Ayo Akinwale as devastating to him and came as a shock to the theatre industry.   In a tribute he signed personally at the residence of the deceased,where he had gone to commiserate with the widow of the late professor,  he stated that the late professor Akinwale  was a seasoned theatre  practitioner,diligent lecturer and a patriot who gave all he had for the development of the creative industry.   According to him " I woke up this morning to the news of the demise of Prof Ayo Akinwale, a prominent and seasoned Nollywood actor, lecturer in the Department of Performing Arts, University of Ilorin, and one of the best artistic directors in Nigeria.  Professor Ayo Akinwale was a boss, mentor, advisor and dependable ally".  He maintained that prof Akinwale  facilitated  events at the National Film and Video

Lagos Waste Management Authority establishes academy

 LAWMA,  an agency of Lagos  Government, statutorily charged with solid waste management, has established an academy. The academy is to provide quality education, proper engagement, adequate sensitisation for strategic decisions about waste management in the State. It is the first of its kind by any waste management authority in Nigeria. LAWMA Academy provides a knowledge hub for credible hands-on tutelage and certification in solid waste management. The Academy offers Internship programme, Organisational Training, Waste Management Specialty Training in, Summer School, Waste Summit and Waste Competition. As a result, the Academy will partner government, academia and institutions for a workable reform in the waste sector.
